LICHEN TRANSPLANT EXPERIMENTS AND AIR-POLLUTION STUDIES

The results are presented of a series of transplant experiments carried out with various corticolous lichens and designed to assess relative sensitivities to air pollution by measuring physiological damage. Comparison is made with mapping data and with results from laboratory experiments with sulphur dioxide. With species of acid bark there is good correlation between the three sets of data, particularly that from the transplant experiments and from mapping studies. Species of basic bark give poor correlations between all three sets of data. These results are discussed in terms of an appraisal of the transplant technique. © 1979, British Lichen Society.
