On the first ionization potentials of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide

摘要
Investigation of the first I. P. of NO2 by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the lowest value that can reasonably be given for the adiabatic I. P. by this technique is 10.0 eV. Excitation of the bending mode. v(2). with frequency 650 cm(-1) is observed. It is shown that traces of NO (adiabatic I. P. 9.26 eV) can lead to misinterpretations. An explanation is offered for the discrepancy between the value reported for the I. P. of NO2 by a photoionization mass spectrometric technique and the present results.
