BLOOD PLATELETS AND HEPARIN-INDUCED LIPOLYTIC ACTIVITY

Samples of fasting and postprandial human whole blood, collected 10 min. after intravenous injection of 5,000 USP units of heparin and incubated at room temperature for 2 hr, released significantly more free fatty acids (FFA) than corresponding plasma samples treated in the same way. Negligible amounts of FFA were released on incubation of control whole blood and plasma samples obtained before injection of heparin. Subsequent investigation of individual formed blood elements indicated that the enhanced postheparin lipolytic activity of the whole blood was mainly associated with the presence of platelets.
