Experiments carried out under metal-to-metal, dry sliding conditions, using a pin/disc wear machine, have clearly illustrated the metallographic changes which contribute to wear damage. It has been shown that the basic laws of wear are obeyed and that both flake and nodular graphite irons exhibit similar running-in, equilibrium and transitional wear behaviour. The changes in the nature of wear are indicated by surface finish, appearance of the wear track, hardness and metallographic changes. Extremely hard layers are developed on the rubbing surfaces and the wear debris produced is identical to the surface from which it has separated. © 1969.
