Systematic studies on the solvent extraction of selenium(IV) organic keto-compounds from hydrochloric acid media are carried out using inert organic solvents. About 70 aliphatic, aromatic, cyclic and heterocyclic ketones of very different structures are used. The compounds are extracted by substituting an α-hydrogen atom of the CH2-group adjacent to the carbonyl function. The rate constants of the single ketones with selenium(IV) are calculated and conclusions are drawn for several organic solvents to understand the extraction mechanism and to define the conditions for a highly selective extraction. The special acidity of the CH2-group adjacent to the CO-function is confirmed by 1H-NMR-spectroscopy. © 1979 Springer-Verlag.
