TROPOSPHERIC SCATTERING OF TWILIGHT N2+ EMISSION

Rayleigh scattering by the troposphere is found to have a serious effect on measurements of the 3914 Å band of N2+ in the twilight atmosphere. A model of the N2+ emission is constructed for the whole twilight atmosphere. Numerical integration of the sky brightness tables of Coulson, Dane and Sekera (1960) gives an almost exact treatment of scattered light. The twilight observations are reproduced satisfactorily by including this effect. Thus, photoionization is sufficient to explain the abundance of N2+ in the twilight. © 1968.
