Measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation time of the biphenyl anion radical in a rigid matrix of 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran indicate that the Van Vleck direct process is followed from 1.25 degrees K to 3.5 degrees K and a Raman process giving a T-2 dependence dominates from 35 degrees K to 81 degrees K. A concentration dependence of T-1 is observed and is interpreted in terms of radical ion pairs.
