M. thermoautotrophicum required Na for growth and for CO2 reduction to methane. The dependence of the rate of growth and methane formation on the Na concentration was hyperbolic with an apparent Ks for Na of .apprx. 1 mM. Na apparently has a specific function in the energy metabolism of this bacterium.
