A FREE-ELECTRON MODEL FOR THE EXCHANGE COUPLING OF FERROMAGNETS THROUGH PARAMAGNETIC METALS

摘要：

A mechanism for the coupling of two ferromagnetic films separated by a metallic paramagnetic film is derived. The coupling oscillates in sign as a function of the thickness of the paramagnetic layer, with the long range period of the oscillation determined by the Fermi wavevector for the paramagnet as in RKKY. However unlike RKKY both the magnitude of the coupling and its detailed behavior at small separations depend on the exchange splitting of the ferromagnets. A comparison with the experimental data for Fe/Cr, Co/Ru and Co/Cu is given.
