General anesthesia can be very helpful in endoscopic procedures. However, it needs complete cooperation and understanding between the anesthetist and endoscopist. Three main methods are suggested: 1) deep general anesthesia, 2) total relaxation with apnea, and 3) total relaxation with controlled ventilation. Analeptic analgesia is a relatively new technique which, when properly used, offers excellent conditions especially for outpatients. © 1969, SAGE Publications. All rights reserved.
