DETERMINATION OF POLY(OXYETHYLENE)ALKYLPHENYL ETHER NON-IONIC SURFACTANTS IN WATER AT TRACE LEVELS BY REVERSED PHASE ADSORPTION LIQUID-CHROMATOGRAPHY AND FIELD DESORPTION MASS-SPECTROMETRY

Poly(oxyethylene)alkylphenyl ether nonionic surfactants in water were adsorbed on an octadecyltrichlorosilane bonded glass bead packed column and eluted by gradient elution from water to 100% methanol In the order octylphenyl, nonylphenyl and dodecylphenyl ethers. The recovery from fortified water samples was more than 96% at 1 mg/L level and 71% at 50μg/L level, respectively. Field desorption mass spectrometry (FDMS) was applied to confirm these compounds in the fraction collected and to determine the degree of polymerization of ethylene oxide. Tables for identification of poly(oxyethylene)alkylphenyl ethers by FDMS were constructed from field desorption mass spectra of standard samples. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
