ANTIGENIC RELATIONSHIPS OF VENOM OF ATRACTASPIS MICROLEPIDOTA TO THAT OF OTHER SNAKES

Venoms of Atractaspis microlepidota and Causes rhombeatus were used in gel diffusion reactions against 31 antisera. Atractaspis venom reacted with 10 of 16 elapid sera giving 1 to 3 bands of precipitate, with 1 of 6 viperid antisera and with 2 of 7 crotalid antisera. Causus venom reacted with all viperid antisera giving 2 to 4 bands of precipitate, with 6 crotalid antisera and with 8 elapid antisera. Atractaspis venom gave no reaction with boomslang (Dispholidus) or sea snake (Enhydrina) antiserum; Causus venom gave a weak reaction with boomslang. Atractaspis venom was not neutralized by cobra, tiger snake or habu antivenins, although it gave strong precipitin reactions with them. No definite evidence for neurotoxic action of Atractaspis venom was obtained. © 1968.
