INTERACTION OF SLOW HIGHLY-CHARGED IONS WITH ATOMS, CLUSTERS AND SOLIDS - A UNIFIED CLASSICAL BARRIER APPROACH

We show how the classical barrier approach can be used in a unified way as a basis for models of single- and multiple-electron transfer in collisions of slow highly charged ions with atoms, clusters and surfaces. The basic formulation is made for electron transfer between a sphere of radius a and dielectric constant epsilon and a slow ion of high charge q. The focus in this contribution is on three limiting cases (a --> 0, a --> infinity and epsilon --> infinity). In particular we numerically evaluate models for slow ions of charge q = 8 colliding with C-60, and show how they give results close to the experimental ones.
