CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF NITROGEN IMPLANTED ARMCO IRON

The corrosion behaviour of nitrogen implanted ARMCO iron was studied. Potentiokinetic polarization curves under controlled fluid-dynamic conditions, as well as photopotential responses and pitting induction time determinations of the passivated ARMCO iron implanted surface in neutral buffer solution were performed. Nitrogen implantation affects the anodic dissolution of iron lowering the intergranular attack, and enhances the protective capacity of the oxide layers in neutral medium, delaying the pit nucleation, reducing the semiconducting properties and lessening the oxide oxygen content. All these features support the hypothesis of thinner, more stoichiometric and homogeneous films, grown on the implanted iron specimens. © 1979.
