EVALUATION OF SEVERAL METHODS FOR ANALYSIS OF SWEET-POTATO PHENOLICS

The phenolic content of the sweet potato cultivars, Australian Canner, Pelican Processor, Porto Rico, Julian, Jewel, Centennial, and the selection NC-319 was measured using several methods. These included bonding to insoluble polymers (Rexyn and polyvinylpyrrolidone), reaction with the Folin-Dennis reagent, computation from the absorbance at 323 nm, coupling with diazotized p-phenylazoaniline and with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone, and measurement by a high-pressure liquid chromatographic procedure. Measurement of changes in absorbance at 323 nm caused by treatment of the sample with Rexyn-201(-Cl-) gave the most rapid and reasonably accurate assay of total phenolic content. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
