WO3(s) and MoO2(s) were fluorinated in a tantalum Knudsen cell at high temperatures, and the effusing molecules were characterized mass spectrometrically. Several equilibria were observed and heats of reaction were derived from temperature-dependence studies. The heats of atomization for the oxyfluoride species are ΔH°298,atoms[WOF4(g)] = 651 ± 10 kcal mol-1; ΔH°298,atoms[WO2F2(g)] = 572 ± 10 kcal mol-1; and ~ΔH°298,atoms[MoO2F2(g)] = 582 ± 15 kcal mol-1.
