OPTICAL-PROPERTIES OF ND-3+ AND DY-3+ IONS IN ZNF2-CDF2 BASED GLASSES

The optical properties of fluorozincate glasses doped with Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions have been studied. From optical absorption measurements and using Judd-Ofelt theory, JO parameters OMEGA-2, OMEGA-4 and OMEGA-6 have been obtained. The OMEGA-2 values indicate that fluorozincate glasses present a more ionic character than fluorozirconates. Emission spectra from the 4F3/2 level of Nd3+ and 4F9/2 level of Dy3+ have been measured. The experimental lifetimes for these levels have been compared to radiative lifetimes obtained through JO parameters. While the agreement is quite good for the 4F3/2 level, only a rough agreement is obtained in the case of 4F9/2 level. The stimulated emission cross section for the 4F3/2 --> 4I1(1/2) transition of Nd3+ ions has also been calculated. It is larger than in fluorozirconate glasses.
