摘要：

This article approaches the pathogenesis of mucosal disease by reviewing the chronologic progress made in the recognition of this disease and in the understanding of the complex series of events necessary to induce this disease. The importance of viral biotype, persistent infection, viral mutation, and antigenic similarity/dissimilarity are discussed.
