MEASUREMENTS AND INTERPRETATION OF delta C-13 OF METHANE FROM TERMITES, RICE PADDIES, AND WETLANDS IN KENYA

Ratios of C-13/C-12 have been measured in methane from a variety of sources in tropical Kenya. Ranges of 6(13)C in CH4 for termites (most values range from -56 to -64 degrees / (00), one is at -44 degrees / (00), one is at similar to-73 degrees / (00)), rice paddies (range -57 to -63 degrees / (00)), and wetlands (range -45 to 50 degrees/ (00) for Lake Baringo, similar to-55 degrees / (00), in the Moloi River, similar to-62 degrees / (00) and similar to-31 degrees / (00) in two swamp areas) are presented. The data are interpreted with the help of additional measurements of delta C-13 of CO2 gas, and organic carbon in plant material, termite bodies, and termite fungus combs. The implications of these findings are related to the problem of studying the atmospheric methane budget.
