The ytterbium-gold system has been investigated using differential thermal, micrographie, and X-ray methods. In the phase diagram, eight intermediate phases appear at the compositions: Yb7Au3, Yb2Au, Yb5Au3, Yb5Au4, YbAu, YbAu2, YbAu3, and YbAu4. Of these, three compounds have congruent melting points (YbAu: m.p. 1292 °C; YbAu2: 1240 °C; YbAu3: 1150 °C); the others are formed by peritectic reactions (Yb7Au3: peritectic point 661 °C; Yb2Au: 712 °C; Yb5Au3: 861 °C; Yb5Au4: 926 °C; YbAu4: 989 °C). Four eutectic points exist at 18.5 at.% Au (546 °C); 58.5 at.% Au (1061 °C); 72.0 at.% Au (1131 °C); 89.0 at.% Au (809 °C). The compositions of the phases have been confirmed by determining the corresponding crystal structures. Solid-solubility exists for gold in YbAu and for ytterbium in gold. From magnetic measurements, ytterbium is found to be trivalent in the three compounds richest in gold and is divalent in the others. © 1969.
