RECOIL REACTION PRODUCTS OF CARBON-11 IN SIMPLE AROMATIC COMPOUNDS

Carbon-11 was produced by the reaction 12C(γ,n)11C in liquid benzene, toluene, and p-xylene, and the labeled products were analyzed by radiogas chromatography. A wide variety of products from methane to phenylacetylene was observed accounting for 20-35% of the total 11C activity in the various systems. The remainder of the activity is shown to reside in higher boiling compounds. The production of analogous products in these systems is discussed, and the effect of the methyl groups on the product distribution is evaluated.
