LOCATION AND OCCURRENCE OF MANDIBULAR FRACTURES - AN ANALYSIS OF 202 CASES

An analysis of 202 mandibular fractures has been presented. The occurrence of fracture locations and fracture combinations has been tabulated in terms of percentage. In all the cases a blunt blow to the mandible was the cause of fracture. The following are significant findings:. First fights were the cause of fractures in approximately 70 per cent of the cases. In our study 72 per cent of the patients were males; 40 per cent of the cases were unilateral body or angle fractures; 64 per cent of the patients were in the 20 to 40 year age group; 27 per cent of the cases were bilateral body fractures; the angle and mental foramen fractures accounted for 55 per cent of the total fracture sites; 75 per cent of the total number of fracture sites occurred in the body and angle; 47 per cent of the symphysis fractures occurred in combination with a body fracture; 42 per cent of the condylar neck fractures occurred alone; 50 per cent of the bilateral body fractures involved the angle of one side with the mental foramen area on the contralateral side; single fractures occurred in 102 cases (50 per cent); the angle represented 30 per cent of the single fracture cases; double fractures represented 47 per cent of the cases; and triple fractures represented 3 per cent of the cases. © 1969.
