A PRACTICAL METHOD FOR ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF RADIONUCLIDE ACTIVITIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL-SAMPLES

An accurate method for radionuclide activity assay of large volume environmental samples measured by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry is presented. It avoids the difficult estimation of corrections or the uncertainty contributions occurring when the samples and the calibration standards differ with respect to any of their matrix properties, spatial radioactivity distribution or gamma-ray spectrum characteristics or to the interactions of the emitted gamma-rays with the source material itself. It consists in duplicating the sample properties in preparation of the standard sources and either in employing the radionuclides to be analysed as calibration nuclides, or in restricting the detection efficiency evaluation to the energy ranges of the major gamma-rays of the nuclides of interest. The method has been applied to specially prepared, mixed compositions of Cs-134, Co-60 and Cs-137 using calibrated, aqueous solutions of each nuclide, but treating some of them as "unknown" samples.
