U-238 SPONTANEOUS FISSION-INDUCED BACKGROUND IN NAI SCINTILLATORS

U-238 spontaneous fission in NaI could be a cause of significant internal background. The observed possible fission event rate is 0.1391+/-0.009/day/10(3) cm3 which appears between 15 MeV and 23 MeV in the gamma energy scale with a large NaI crystal. The direct assay of the U-238 contamination in the NaI crystal, based on the fission rate, is approximately 64 ppb. This estimate is significantly higher than that by alpha counting assuming equilibrium in U-238. The discrepancy may suggest the inadequacy of the assumption.
