THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF A BI-CA-SR-CU-O HIGH-TC SUPERCONDUCTOR PRODUCED BY RAPID SOLIDIFICATION

The microstructure of a high-Tc superconducting Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O ceramic, produced by rapid solidification and annealing, was investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the predominant superconducting phase in the polyphase material corresponded to Bi2CaSr2Cu2O8+δ. This phase formed during annealing at 860 °C by crystallisation of an amorphous material produced by rapid solidification. Evidence was obtained for variation of interplanar spacings and the existence of special 'c-plane grain boundaries' within the high-TC phase.
