Low-temperature (4.2 K) photoluminescence (PL) measurements have been performed on CuGaS2 crystals grown from nonstoichiometric starting materials. The Cu-rich crystals showed several sharp zero-phonon lines at 2.397, 2.404 and 2.417 eV in contrast to the Ga-rich crystals showing the strong donor-acceptor pair emission at 2.4 eV. The origins of these PL peaks are discussed in terms of the native defects introduced by the deviation from stoichiometry.
