In this paper we investigate the uniform flow past a circular cylinder with sampling taking place through a slot on the surface of the cylinder, which is inclined at an angle alpha to the oncoming flow. An analysis of the fluid flow in the vicinity of the stagnation points and the sink has been performed, and a numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations obtained. Only the fluid mechanics are investigated, but from the theory presented in this paper the conditions under which aerosol sampling may be predicted by potential flow theory is discussed.
