The role of oxygen defects in superconductivity and their effect on the electron states has been studied by X-ray absorption fine structure on the Cu K and Ce L3 edges, for Nd2-xCexCuO4-y (0.0 < x < 0.20) annealed at various oxygen partial pressures (pO2 = 1-10(-4) atm). The results indicate that the reduction enhances the electron density at the copper sites, without changing the oxygen deficiency y. A possible mechanism of carrier enhancement through the removal of a small number of excess oxygen atoms which would suppress n-type doping in the CuO2 plane is presented.
