SWEETPOTATO WEEVIL, CYLAS-FORMICARIUS-ELEGANTULUS (SUMMERS) COLEOPTERA, CURCULIONIDAE - DEVELOPMENT, FECUNDITY, AND LONGEVITY

Temperature affected the development and longevity of the sweet potato weevil, C. formicarius elegantulus (Summers), reared on sweet potato cultivar Jewel. Mean developmental time decreased as temperature increased from 20.degree. to 30.degree. C. Adult weevils lived longest at 15.degree. C, indicating that prolonged storage of sweet potatoes at 15.degree. C will not eliminate weevil populations. Frequency of mating, availability of males and crowding significantly affected fecundity.
