THE INFLUENCE OF MAGNETIC-FIELD AND ROTATION ON THE ONSET OF CONVECTION IN THE ENVELOPES OF NEUTRON-STARS

The influence of magnetic field and rotation on the occurrence of convective instabilities in the liquid layer of neutron star envelopes has been investigated. The critical wavelength λc, which denotes the boundary between stable and unstable behaviour of convective disturbances, is calculated for a neutron star model as a function of magnetic field and rotation. It is shown that the strength of the magnetic fields of neutron stars strongly suppresses the onset of convection, whereas the limiting effect of rotation acts only if the magnetic field vanishes. © 1990 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
