Rate constants and activation parameters have been determined for electron transfer between cyclooctatetraene (COT) dianion and the anion radical for various COT-solvent-M (where M = Li, Na, K) systems. As determined by electron spin and nuclear magnetic resonance, the rate constant for electron transfer (eq 1) is very dependent upon the solvent and the counterion. Even in ammonia, a relatively protic and ionizing solvent, the rate of electron transfer is dependent upon the counterion. Possible line-broadening mechanisms in this solvent are discussed. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
