Defining the woman at risk for developing ovarian cancer can identify factors that cause the disease and lead to earlier diagnosis and improved survival. A 3 yr case-control study of 197 women with histologic proven primary ovarian cancer of the epithelial type revealed that the typical patient had a family history of gynecologic cancer, was exposed to rubella in the peripubertal period, was nulliparous or of low parity, experienced difficulty in conceiving, had certain exacerbated premenstrual symptoms and rarely underwent surgically induced menopause. In women with carcinomas of low malignant potential a later onset of menarche and menstrual disorders occur.
