The concentration effect defines the impact of the inspired anesthetic concentration on the rate at which the alveolar concentration rises towards the inspired concentration. The effect of the inspired concentration on the rate at which the alveolar concentration rises can be quantitatively described in terms of an apparent blood solubility. This apparent solubility is related both to the actual blood solubility and to the inspired concentration. The appeal of the relationship lies in its surprising simplicity.
