SCANNING-TUNNELING-MICROSCOPY OF VAPOR-PHASE GROWN NANOTUBES OF CARBON

摘要
Nanotubes of carbon can be produced by vapor condensation of carbon on a flat graphite surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy revealed the presence of tubes with very small diameters from 10 to 70 angstrom, and up to several hundred nanometers in length. Most of the tubes are terminated by hemispherical caps and some are well aligned, forming bundles. Atomic resolution images of the tubes show that they have a helical graphitic nature.
