摘要
Two groups of azobenzene derivatives, one with a hydrogen (H) terminated alkyl chain and another with a bromine (Br) terminated chain, adsorbed on graphite in the crystalline state were imaged by scanning-tunneling microscopy. A head-to-tail configuration was seen in the Br-terminated compounds, while some of the H-terminated derivatives showed a head-to-head configuration. These images reflect the strong interaction of hydrogen atoms of alkyl chain with the hexagon center of graphite lattice, resulting in an epitaxial crystal rather than simply an adsorbed thin film. For both compounds, lower limits of tunneling impedance were determined for stable molecular imaging. Due to the crystalline state of both compounds under observation, it was found that by lowering the impedance below the threshold value molecules are irreversibly removed from a small area around the tunneling region.
