Yb-172+ ions have been confined and laser cooled in an RF trap. The Yb+ resonance fluorescence signal at 369.5 nm from a few trapped ions at low pressure did not decay over several hours, in contrast to the signal from large numbers of ions which decayed in a few minutes. The 4f(14)6s 2S1/2 - 4f(14)5d 2D5/2 transition in Yb+ was driven for the first time by a laser at 411 nm which extinguished fluorescence. A plan is outlined for accurately determining the 4f(14)6s 2S1/2 - 4f(13)6s2 2F7/2 transition energy in Yb+ so that it may be investigated as a potential optical frequency standard.
