DEFECTS IN ALKYLCYANOBIPHENYL MOLECULAR-CRYSTALS STUDIED BY SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY

摘要
The ordering of alkylcyanobiphenyls liquid crystals grown on graphite and MoS2 is examined using scanning tunneling microscopy. The molecules are seen to form a rigid two-dimensional molecular lattice with properties similar to a crystalline solid. The molecular film is free of defects over distances of hundreds of nanometers. Monoatomic steps in the substrate and grain boundaries and screw dislocations in the adsorbate molecular lattice are observed. Both the ordering and the defects are successfully analyzed taking into account the registry of the molecules with the underlying substrate.
