THE FEMINIZATION OF PSYCHOLOGY - IMPLICATIONS FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY

The presumed feminization of psychology, particularly psychotherapy subfields, was analyzed using forecasting methods. Curves fitted to the distribution of male and female Ph.D.s from 1974 to 1989 were used to make projections into the year 2000. Predicted gender distribution of Ph.D.s varied according to the time period on which they were based. Implications for the future of psychotherapy are discussed in terms of economic factors, sex differences, and societal attitudes.
