This study of Grey Heron mortality suggests that the British population would have been in a parlous state if legal protection (which increased first-year survivalj had not been introduced. Even now, an increased proportion of first-summer birds needs to join the breeding population for numbers to be maintained. © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
