NEMATODES ASSOCIATED WITH CARROTS IN SCOTLAND

Six hundred and fifteen soil samples were collected from 59 farms growing carrots and examined for plant parasitic nematodes. Of the potentially economically important species found the most frequently occurring were Longidorus elongatus, Rotylenchus goodeyi and Tylenchorhynchus dubius. However, numbers were generally insufficient to cause damage. At a site heavily infested with R. robustus, treatments with the oximecarbamate, aldicarb or the soil fumigant, dichloropropene significantly increased the yields of carrots by an average of 17 and 47% respectively.
