FLUORESCENCE OF (5,6)-FULLERENE-C70 IN ROOM-TEMPERATURE SOLUTIONS - QUANTUM YIELDS AND WELL-RESOLVED SPECTRA AS A FUNCTION OF EXCITATION WAVELENGTH

Well-resolved fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra Of C70 in room-temperature hexane and toluene solutions are obtained through noise elimination by the application of principal component analysis. Fluorescence quantum yields of 5.1 x 10(-4) and 5.9 X 10(-4) are determined for C70 in hexane and toluene, respectively. Fluorescence spectra and quantum yields are excitation wavelength independent over the entire absorption spectrum, indicating no competing decay pathways to the rapid internal conversion relaxation of the upper excited singlet states. The excited-state properties of C70 are discussed based on these results and a careful comparison between experimental and calculated fluorescence radiative rate constants.
