INTERACTION OF SULFUR(IV)-OXIDES WITH ETHYLENEDIAMINE-TETRAACETATORUTHENATE(III) IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTION

摘要
The reaction between [Ru(III)(edta)(H2O)]- (edta = ethylenediaminetetraacetate) with sulfite has been investigated. Formation of a stable diamagnetic Ru(II)(edta)(SO3)4- complex as an end product of the reaction was evidenced by epr and electrochemical observations. Experimental results further demonstrate the formation of a mu-oxo intermediate [Ru(III)(edta)-O-Ru(III)(edta)]4- Species in a rapid, sulfite-independent step. Results are discussed with reference to data reported for Fe(III)(edta)-catalysed auto-oxidation of sulfur(IV) oxides in aqueous solution.
