CATHODIC DISCHARGE OF HYDROGEN ON ACTIVE AND PASSIVE CHROMIUM SURFACES IN DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID SOLUTIONS

摘要
Pure chromium when exposed to hydrogen saturated 1 N H2SO4 exhibits both a stable active mixed potential, -0·708 V(sce) and a stable passive mixed potential, -0·382 V(sce), involving the same reduction process. The reduction kinetics of the 2H+/ H2 redox system on both active and passive chromium surfaces are described. Tafel constants, hydrogen exchange cds and activation energies, for the reduction process on the two surfaces are presented and discussed with regard to the possible mechanisms. These data indicate that the discharge of hydrogen occurs by different mechanisms on active and passive surfaces. © 1969.
