摘要
The properties of excitons in rare-gas solids are reviewed, and new information from time-resolved luminescence of free excitons concerning exciton dynamics is discussed in more detail. Then the role of excitons in desorption of ground-state and excited-state neutrals is described. One of the main experimental advantages for an investigation of such processes is primary selective excitation with synchrotron radiation. A deep understanding of the ''cavity-ejection mechanism'' for the desorption of excited atoms and molecules is obtained from a correlation with the ''V-0 values'' (electron affinities) of the respective material. This correlation even holds for fragmentation of rare-gas clusters following primary selective excitation.
