PHOTOELECTRON-SPECTROSCOPY TOWARDS THE MEV RANGE - OBSERVATION OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING TRANSITION IN NB3AL

摘要
We have measured with very high resolution (13 meV) the photoelectron spectrum of the conventional A15 superconductor Nb3Al above and below the bulk critical temperature of 18.6 K. Our results show spectral modifications near the Fermi level that are related to the transition to the superconducting state and are compatible with the predictions of the BCS model with T(c) = 14 K. The effect is twice as large as the Fermi-edge thermal broadening between 10 and 20 K measured in a metal in the normal state, under the same conditions. These results establish that high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy yields sound information on the electronic-states transformation due to the superconducting transition.
