Nitrite accumulated, temporarily, in the medium at certain stages during the growth of suspension cultures of Paul's Scarlet rose. The accumulation of NO2- was 30-fold greater in cultures grown in medium containing only NO3- as compared to cultures grown with both NO3- and NH4+. The ratio of nitrate reductase to nitrite reductase changed during culture growth, but at all stages the in vitro nitrite reductase activity exceeded the activity of nitrate reductase. Changes in the levels of nitrate reductase versus nitrite reductase did not provide a satisfactory explanation for the accumulation of NO2-. © 1979.
