VARIATIONAL STUDY OF A SIMPLE-MODEL FOR BIPOLARONS

In this paper we have generalized the variational approach proposed by Zheng [Solid State Commun. 65, 731 (1988)] and applied it to a simple model for bipolarons. We have introduced a new trial state with both variable displacement and squeezing. With optimal values of the variational displacement and squeezing parameters, this trial state will by construction yield an energy lower than that obtained by Zheng. This means that our variational ansatz is more stable as the ground state of the system. Also, in this approximate ground state the reduction effect of phonons is further alleviated.
