GALAXIES WITH STRONG NARROW EMISSION-LINES - SPECTROSCOPY, MORPHOLOGY AND RANGE IN ABSOLUTE SIZES

摘要
A sample of 47 Tololo emission line galaxies is considered. New spectroscopy for 29 of these galaxies is presented. The galaxies are classified morphologically into: (a) Entire galaxy is emission line source. These galaxies - shown in Plate 1 - are generally blue ellipticals with an average emission line ratio Hβ/4959 just less than unity. Their diameters range from ∼10 kpc down to unresolvable - one of them could not be resolved under 0.5 arcsec seeing, (b) Outer regions are emission line source - see Plate 2. They appear to be normal or supersized H II regions in late type galaxies, (c) Nucleus only is emission line source. These galaxies are characterized by a low Hβ/4959 ratio and appear related to Seyfert 2 galaxies, (d) Multiple systems with a high Hβ/4959 ratio. © 1980 Royal Astronomical Society.
