摘要
This paper discusses development of the theoretical understanding of the principle of pressure-induced polarization coupling and describes the improved construction, operation and temperature desensitization of a fiber-optic sensor of high pressure (up to 100 MPa) in two configurations, including the requirements for an integrated electronic measurement system based on this innovative sensing technology. The sensor exploits the effect of polarization coupling between two orthogonally polarized eigenmodes of a highly birefringent, polarization-preserving optical fiber which serves as the sensing element. An idea of temperature desensitization of the sensor output signal is demonstrated for the first time in application to any fiber optic pressure sensor reported to date so that a practical device with the significantly reduced temperature sensitivity can be constructed. The requirements for an electronic measurement system based on the new sensor are also discussed, including identification of the parametric and functional specifications and constraints of such a system. © 1990 IEEE
