1. 1. Intracellular recordings were made from the Retzius cells in the segmental ganglia of the leech, Hirudo medicinalis. L-Glutamate has a direct excitatory action on the neurons. 2. 2. L-Glutamate causes an increase in the membrane conductance. 3. 3. L-Glutamate causes conductance increase at the Retzius cell to both sodium and potassium ions but not to chloride ions. © 1979.
